How I live-Streamed Koby's Bar Mitzvah using Zoom

Though you may have been disappointed to realise you won’t be able to have quite the Bar Mitzvah celebration you were hoping for your boy there’s no reason, with a little thought, why you can’t make this an even more memorable experience.

Here’s a few simple things worth thinking about in order to produce a great quality memorable live-stream for your child’s Bar Mitzvah.

Variety

​By using multiple cameras you can show your guests different views of the room, including close-ups of your Bar Mitzvah boy, your family and the rabbi or chazan.

​The unique aspect of using cameras with zoom (not 'Zoom'!) lenses is that I can get up close and personal and really help to make the audience feel as though there are right there in the action.

Sound Quality

​Pay attention to your sound. People want to hear what is being said so think about where you put any microphones to achieve maximum effect.

​With good quality microphones placed discreetly I could monitor the speaking as it happened and ensure that nobody watching misses a thing. It this regard it may even have been more successful that being sat in the shul!

Opening & Closing Credits

​To polish the show off why not include some introductory or closing graphics to welcome your guests or thank them for attending?

​For this Bar Mitzvah I played a slideshow of photos prepared by Koby’s parents to introduce Koby (and maybe slightly embarrass him!) but it was a good way to relax everyone and start the Bar Mitzvah with a warm and happy feeling.

​I wanted to make sure that all the cameras and microphones were positioned as discreetly as possible so that the family weren’t daunted by the prospect of ‘performing’ on camera and could just enjoy the ceremony. Judging by the amount of happy photos I think I achieved that goal!

​I am pleased that both Koby’s family and Senior Minister Albert Chait were very pleased with the technology I provided to make this live-streamed event happen and Albert said "it was one of the most special things I’ve been a part of”.

​Although the live stream was the main focus I was also able to record and edit together a final video as a memento of Koby’s coming of age for the family to keep and look back on in years to come.
